Brighella was Harlequin’s crony.

Brighella  was Harlequin’s  crony, and was more roguish and sophisticated, a cowardly villain who would do anything for money.Brighella is choleric, violent, exaggerated in his behaviour and a, womanizer. He is  catlike and sordid in his quest for food,  a confirmed liar and persuasive in his love pursuits. He is always ready for intrigue, always ready for the next fight.

His early costume consisted of a  loosely-fitting, white smock and pants with green trim. He was often equipped with a batocio (also batacchio or battacio, depending on region) or slap stick, or else with a wooden sword. Later he took to wearing a sort of livery with a matching cape. He wore a greenish half-mask (traditionally olive-green) displaying a look of preternatural lust and greed. He came into his own around the start of the 16th century.
