Pierott the sad clown, pinning for the love of Columbine who, choosing Harliqin, leaves Pierott heartbroken. In performance this character did not wear a mask but displayed his sad face in white make up. Sometimes we find him in a loose fitting white blouse with large buttons and wide white pantaloons. On other occasions he appears with a frilled collaret and a hat, usually with a close-fitting crown and wide round brim. Occasionally we see him in a conical shaped dunce’s-type cap. But most frequently, since his reincarnation under Jean-Gaspard Deburau, he wears neither collar nor hat, only a black skullcap.

And here he is – the archetypal sad clown, as portrayed by Meissen porcelain
