From time to time The Meissen Man visits specialist antique dealers to see some of their exciting and rare stock. Today’s visit was to KandM antiques in Grays Antiques Centre London to inspect a fabulous set of Meissen Cabinet plates painted Ernst August Leuteritz(for more information scroll down below. Leuteritz is a  name synonymous with the continued success of the Meissen factory for nearly half of the 19th century where he worked much of the time as head of the modelling and painting department. His standard of workmanship can be compared to that of Kaendler. Their only differences Kaendler created all the many designs that Leuteritz would copy and add his own style 100 years later.

Kaendler designed more than 2,000 models during his career at Meissen particularly specialising in the rococo period. Leuteritz while copying many of his designs also created his own style. Amongst this were finely painted plates that were never used. But painted so they could be admired for their striking lifelike painting.

If you wanted to see some of Leuteritz’s highly regarded workmanship there are very few places you can go and inspect his work. One such place is Grays Antique Market off Davies Street close to Bond Street Station on the Central Line. It is the only indoor antique centre remaining in London.

There are a number of ceramic specialists in Grays. Specialists whose focus is period ceramics and works of art and Martin Harris whose business K and M Antiques specialises in Japanese works of art, 19th century Meissen, Floradanica and 20th century English porcelain.

I was paying Martin a visit to inspect a wonderful set of blue ground reticulated plates painted by Leuteritz circa 1880. To see just one of these plates is rare but a set of six of these finely painted plates is exceptional. Each of the scenes on the plates are within cartouches each painted with an equestrian scene after Philip Wouwerman, a prolific 17th century Dutch Artist. Each of the plates are decorated in a rich cobalt blue ground picked out in gold, the reticulated rims pierced with trellis and vine applied flower-heads. 25cms diameter. Underglaze blue crossed swords mark with impressed factory numerals. For further information about the plates contact Martin via his website at https://www.graysantiques.com/dealer/k-m-antiques
